Suspected Suicide
20 June 2011

Time: 21:03 - 21:45

Bernard Matthews II
A person was reported jumping from the Brittania Pier.

The coastgaurd called Owen Nutt who had just been out on Excercise with
a young crew and launched immediately. By the time the pagers went off the boat was at the Pier.

They joined the Gorleston ILB who had got there just before us as they were already in the River on Excercise. This must be a record response time as the boat was actually afloat before the pagers went off.

A search was carried out in the area by both Lifeboats but nothing was found. A person was reported acting suspiciously on the beach and police and Coastgaurd spoke to him but to no avail.

Both lifeboats were stood down after a search of the sea in the immediate area. With the call being a suspected hoax.

It is unfortunate that these things happen but it is also important to respond to all calls as people have been lost under similar circumstances. If someone had been in the Sea, the speed of response of the Local Coastgaurd at Haven Bridge House and the arrival of the two lifeboats in double quick time, would have almost definately resulted in a life saved.

So well done to all involved on a record breaking response.

Crew were:- Assistant Cox Owen Nutt on helm, Assistant Cox Tommy Williams, Crewman Andrew Turner, Marcus Brown, Aston Lowe, Tim Harris, Bob Brown and a visiting RNLI lifeboat man from down south.

The Tractor Driver was Ali Brown.
